Continuous Bias Binding

  1. Cut a square of fabric the size calculated to produce the length of binding required.

To calculate how large the square must be:

1.         Multiply the length of the strip needed by its width to find its area.

2.         Determine the square root of the area to estimate the square size needed.

Example:

Strip needed is 2" wide by 100" long
2" x 100" = 200" square area
square root of  200 = 14.14

Round up and cut a 15" fabric square

  1. Mark two opposite edges, (Diagram 1) then cut the square diagonally from one corner to the other.

  2. Place the two pin-marked edges right sides together, raw edges aligned and triangle nubs overlapping equally at each end. (Diagram 2)
  3. Sew the segments together with a 1/4" seam allowance. (Diagram 3)
  4. Use your ruler to mark cutting lines parallel to the long edges on the reverse side of the fabric, spacing the cutting lines to equal the width of the required binding strip. (Diagram 3)
  5. Make a tube by bringing the right sides of the fabric together, offsetting the ends by one line making sure the lines match each other exactly. Sew the ends together with a 1/4" seam allowance (Diagram 4)
  6. Start cutting from the offset corner side of the tube, directly on a drawn line. Continue cutting around the tube until you have one long strip of bias binding.
  7. Press open seam allowances
